IUP tennis team wins 2022 PSAC Championship

The IUP women's tennis team has seen an impressive season, with sweeping wins against teams like Slippery Rock and Denison.

Back-2-Back Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) wins for the IUP Women’s Tennis Team.

This marks the fourth all-time PSAC title for the IUP Women's Tennis program, all since 2017.

The IUP Hawks also went back-to-back in 2017 and 2018.

Crimson Hawks defeated Slippery Rock 4-1 in the tournament championship match Saturday at Bloomsburg University.

This win clinches an automatic bid to the Division II NCAA Championship, which gets underway with regionals this coming weekend.

Already the top seed in the latest regional rankings, the win all but wraps up the Number one spot and home court advantage in the Atlantic Region Championship.

On Friday, the IUP Women’s Tennis Team defeated West Chester 4-0 in the semifinal round of the 2022 PSAC Championship Friday at Bloomsburg University's Burt Reese Tennis Center.

Saturday's match was the 12th straight victory for the Hawks as they improved to a 17-7 overall record.

They are undefeated since returning from their spring break trip and have not lost since March 19th.

The PSAC win was also the second of the year over Slippery Rock University (SRU).

IUP defeated SRU 6-1 during the regular season, clinching the PSAC West regular season title on April 20.

Karolin Kirchtag (senior, sports administration) snagged the title for the Hawks at the number one singles spot, defeating Lois Page 2-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Down 1-0 after doubles play, the Hawks rallied for four straight singles wins.

Kirchtag was joined in the singles win column by Lydia Vlachou (sophomore, public health), Joanna Stralka (junior, biology/pre-med), and Laura Dunarova (senior, accounting).

Vlachou picked up the first point with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at number five.

Stralka followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win at number two and Dunarova won at number six by a score of 6-1, 6-4.

Kirchtag and Graydon combined for IUP's only doubles victory, winning 6-4 at the number two spot.

It was a hard-fought match, and a well-deserved win for the IUP Women, as they have been putting in the demanding work since the season began.

Next on the Crimson Hawks schedule is The NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Selection Show that aired Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. ET on NCAA.com.
