Historic.

That’s the one word that describes the school year that was for IUP athletics.

Not all of the history was good. Not all of it was bad, either, but it was historic nonetheless.

The 2009-10 school year saw some unbelievable celebrations and some major disappointments.

I will begin with the latter during the fall semester.

The fall semester saw the field hockey team follow up a 15-3 season in 2008 with a mediocre 6-8 in 2009. The team did finish 5-3 in the PSAC West, but narrowly missed the PSAC playoffs by losing a tiebreaker to Mercyhurst. The team now has a new head coach, Gary Agard, who served as an assistant on a Bloomsburg team that was a perennial power in the PSAC. Then IUP had possibly its biggest let-down in quite some time: the football team.

The IUP football program traditionally is one of the most successful and revered on the Division II landscape. It was always a cut above the rest of the conference, and it showed from the talent it gathered to the respect and reputation it garnered throughout the country.

As an athlete, your article was offensive.You mentioned every fall sport except soccer who made it to the Sweet 16 and made history. You mentioned every winter sport but you only mentioned lacrosse for the spring season. I don't find in necessary to only point out the negative aspects of the spring season. You failed to mention the softball team setting the record for the most wins in a single season, the baseball team's success in the PSAC tournament, or the tennis team's success. The "of course" you threw in when you mentioned our men's team falling to Cal Poly Pomona was not needed at all either. I'm not sure why The Penn has someone who clearly isn't an actual fan representing our varsity sports. As athletes we work hard all year round to try to represent our school the best way we can. So you should probably give credit when its deserved instead of only criticizing us. By the way, throughout the year, we all tend to notice that you only write articles on sports when they lose games, not usually when they win. So you try to find better seats next time because obviously you don't have the best seat in the house.
