IUP split a doubleheader against PSAC rival Gannon University to take the No. 1 spot in the PSAC West going into the conference tournament.

The first game started with the Crimson Hawks taking an early lead in the first inning after first baseman Kyle Stryker singled to left field for an RBI. The Crimson Hawks lead was extended to 3-0 in the second inning when Stryker brought in two runs with a single.

Gannon was able to get on the board in the second inning when first baseman Greg Radwan hit an RBI double. Radwan put the second run of the inning on the board when he scored because of an error by IUP second baseman Jamie Smith.

Gannon’s catcher Brandon Crum was able to tie it up late in the second inning with an RBI single.

The Crimson Hawks took the lead once more when designated hitter Robbie Zinsmeister hit an RBI and almost picked up a run attempting to get an inside the park homerun but was called out at home plate. Zinsmeister’s RBI was the Hawks’ final run of the game and the lead didn’t last long.

Gannon scored a run in the bottom of the third inning after third baseman Shaine Patsilevas brought in an RBI after grounding out to IUP shortstop Paul Bingham.

In the fourth inning, the Crimson Hawks made two pitching changes and gave up three runs — one from an RBI single, another from a balk by IUP pitcher Tyler Squibbs and a third run because of a throwing error by IUP right fielder Jacob Shaffer.
