If you are a woman and would like to gain knowledge on calculating a budget or how to negotiate a salary, now is your chance. The American Association of University Women (AAUW) along with the President's Commission of the Status of Women are sponsoring a Start Smart Workshop. The workshop will take place at 6 p.m. March 22 in the Center for Health and Well-being.

The workshop's goal is to educate women on how to properly calculate a budget depending on where they would want to live, what fair pay is, and how to negotiate a salary and benefits in a professional manner.

"We wanted to provide them an opportunity to really think about on what is their pay and how to negotiate that pay package," said Malinda Cowles, presenter of the Start Smart Workshop.

The Start Smart Workshop is not part of a series, but it is hoped that the workshop can be offered periodically on campus. The workshop has been held once before in the spring semester of 2010. It is usually offered in the spring in the hopes that any woman who is graduating or getting summer jobs will benefit from it.

The workshop will not only consist of instruction, but participants will be given the opportunity to practice the skills they are taught while there. The workshop is free to anyone wishing to attend.

Cowles will be presenting the workshop as she has been taught through the training course offered by AAUW for those wishing to offer the workshop to the women on their campus.

Any women who are interested in registering for the Start Smart Workshop can e-mail Cowles at malinda@iup.edu.
