Brenton F. Croll, 18, Roaring Spring, was found dead in his friend's dorm room at noon Wednesday at the first floor of Lawrence Hall, the Indiana County Coroner's Office reported.
Croll (freshman, nursing) had reportedly been drinking heavily the night before his death, according to Indiana County Coroner Mike Baker.
Though Croll lived on the fourth floor of Lawrence Hall, he stayed the night in a friend's room on the first floor.
Croll's friend woke at 7 a.m. for class and, upon return, was unable to wake Croll, Baker reported. The friend called 911. Baker pronounced Croll dead at the scene around 1 p.m.
Those who knew Croll remember him as friendly and adventurous. "Brent [Croll] and I have been best friends since middle school," said friend Camden Gentry (freshman, undeclared science/math). "We always did everything together. He was never afraid to try anything new."
Gentry said Croll loved to hunt, fish and play Frisbee, and made friends so quickly it was hard to remember their names.
"He … made so many friends in his time at IUP," Gentry said. "I'm horrible at making friends, but he ... would introduce me to the people he met and make my friends for me.
"He was so outgoing…"IUP police are investigating Croll's death, though Baker said he does not suspect foul play. An autopsy and toxicology tests took place Thursday and results are pending, according to coroner's reports. There are no funeral arrangements at this time.
