Eight cars in the Sigma Chi fraternity house's parking lot, located at 246 S. Seventh St. were set on fire Wednesday morning, in very close proximity to the house.
The first 911 call came in at 4:29 a.m., according to Detective Scott Schuller of Indiana Borough Police. The fire trucks arrived around 5 a.m.
"The flames were so high, I thought the house was on fire," said Sigma Chi brother Mike Myers (senior, political science).
As the last of the vehicles were being towed around 4 p.m. Wednesday, the brothers of the fraternity stood behind the police tape and witnessed the damage that was done to their vehicles.
According to Schuller, initial investigation revealed that someone most likely poured some sort of flammable liquid onto the cars before igniting them, but a full investigation is underway.
Investigators used a powdery whit compound to lift samples of the black substance left behind for evidence after the cars were removed from the lot.
According to the brothers, and owners of the vehicles, there is no known cause for the fires right now.
"We don't know why someone would do this," said Ben Saxton (sophomore, business/finance), brother of Sigma Chi and owner of the Chevrolet Monte Carlo that was damaged in the fire.
