Well, IUP, finals week is finally here. It's been a blast bringing you a review in Scene Selections every Friday, so for my last column of the year I thought I'd switch things up and shine the light on a bunch of the anticipated big-screen flicks that you don't want to miss. Let's end this with a bang.
"X-Men Origins: Wolverine"
May 1
Following the two-hits-and-a-miss "X-Men" Trilogy, Marvel follows up with a little rewind action starring Hugh Jackman again as Wolverine.
Watch the Oscar-host as he ditches the song and dance routine for a couple of claws and a whole lot of bad-assery in his own full feature flick.
Beam me up J.J. Abrams . . . wait, that's not right. Anyhow, look forward to a re-start of the "Star Trek" franchise. Although the trailer may look like it's going to be the same length of the entire "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, have no fear as this space adventure clocks in at just over two hours. Join Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto) and gang as they go from Starfleet Academy to the Enterprise for this one in early May.
"Terminator Salvation"
May 21
Christian Bale shows his hero side once again in late May to fight off the hoards of machines that are trying to take over the world (I told you so). In the fourth installment of the "Terminator" franchise, John Connor (Bale) is all grown up and finally leading the human resistance against the tenacious "terminators." From the official trailers "Terminator Salvation" looks like it is going to be one hell of a ride with a menagerie of eye-candy. Excellent.
"Angels & Demons"
May 15
Following the suspenseful hit "The Da Vinci Code," Tom Hanks returns to star in another thriller based on a book by acclaimed novelist Dan Brown. This time around Langdon (Hanks) is joined by Ewan McGregor and Ayelet Zurer to do whatever they can to stop the evil "Illuminati" from following through with their plans to destroy the Catholic Church once and for all. Get ready to see some serious conspiracy theories put to the test for this mystery.
"Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian"
May 22
Looking for a good, wholesome family film to check out in theaters this summer? Look no further than the second installment of "Night at the Museum." Ben Stiller brings back the historical (and hysterical) comedy for another serving, this time at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. Look for a lot of the cast from the first installment to make another appearance in this one, always a good thing.
"The Soloist"
Two of Hollywood's leading actors, Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr., star in this passionate retelling of a true story about a columnist who comes across a mysteriously talented homeless man in Los Angeles. Once destined for musical fame, Nathaniel Ayers (Foxx) is now trudging through Skid Row, and Steve Lopez (Downey) makes it his mission to find out why. There is a lot of buzz around this one, from critics and the music world as well.
Get giddy, all you 80s kids! The second installment of the "Transformers" franchise is back this summer with a whole lot more robot carnage to boot. Shia LeBeouf and Megan Fox (drool) are back for another dose too. And, if you haven't guessed from the title, everyone's favorite decepticon to hate, Megatron, is back as well, and this time he's really pissed! Looks like everyone is turning in his or her R.S.V.P just in time for this flick's June release date. Don't miss it!
July 10
Remember a few years back when Sacha Baron Cohen dressed up like a foreign reporter and made fun of us silly American's in "Borat"? Well, he's back again for another helping of hilarity in "Bruno," the story of a gay Austrian hell-bent on showing the world what real fashion looks like. If it turns out anything like "Borat," court cases and lawsuits will be following the trail of laughter.
July 15
Here we go again, Potter fans. Although originally set to be released in theaters last November, none of the glory - or anticipation - seems to be lost for the sixth installment of the Harry Potter series. The questions now seem to fall into two categories: who's going bite it, and who's going make out? Time will tell, my wizardly friends. Look for it mid-July.
"Funny People"
July 31
Last but not least comes a comedy from one of my favorites, Judd Apatow. Starring Adam Sandler and Seth Rogan (not to mention the regular Apatow posse), Apatow takes a turn into drama with "Funny People." When George Simmons (Sandler) learns that he has only one year left to live, he seeks out the aid and friendship of another comedian (Rogan). Trying to find a real purpose in life and right his wrongs, comedy ensues as the duo shows us a different side of the comedy business.
Well, that's all folks. It's looking to be a great summer at the movies, so get through those finals, get out and go enjoy a barrel of popcorn and a good flick every chance you get. That's a wrap.Recommended: Articles that may interest you
